This is the first health education teaching manual to use children's picture books to teach nutrition and health concepts, grades 1-3. Theoretically sound, the 31 developmentally appropriate lessons help to promote health literacy.

The National Health Education Standards are used as a framework for the curriculum content, and multiple intelligences are used as a framework for the instructional methods. This book is an excellent model of curriculum integration because it maintains the rigor of health education content in the process of relating it to the language arts and other disciplines.

The book helps teachers to use children's picture books they already have in their classrooms for health education. It focuses on teaching several health-related concepts, such as moderation, variety, and serving sizes, while also teaching such concepts as energy, time, patterns, age, culture, behavior, and prevention. Teachers will learn to teach health education at the same time as they are developing literacy.

  • Offers lesson plans for 31 feature books. Every lesson has multidisciplinary curriculum connections to eight disciplines, including health education and physical education. Easy-to-follow lesson plans will increase time for integrated curriculum.
  • Curriculum is aligned with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the Food Guide Pyramid, and the Guidelines for School Health Programs to Promote Lifelong Healthy Eating. Teachers will be reassured to know they are following the current guidelines of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
  • Book uses multiple intelligences theory to organize instruction so teachers know they are accommodating their students' multiple ways of knowing. Traditional, portfolio, and performance assessments are encouraged.
  • Each of the 31 lessons uses individual and group strategies (cooperative learning) and includes inquiry-based questions to develop critical thinking about the featured picture books.
  • Applies the Coordinated School Health Program model (CDC) through school, home, and community connections. Each unit outlines ways that classroom teachers can team with food service professionals, parents, and caregivers to teach the curriculum. Teachers will learn how to use the resources in their communities.
  • Has an extensive bibliography of more than two hundred picture books for teaching nutrition and health concepts.
